Filmmaker Statement

Female-led revenge films fall into two camps. Either the character is a stylized super spy/assassin gone rogue, or the victim of an unspeakable atrocity who takes up arms and bumbles her way to justice. There is a distinct and disturbing difference between films led by men. Namely, they let the boys have all the fun. Male revenge fare is routinely led by a complete sociopath -- willing to maim, dismember, and blow up anyone in their way, without batting an eye. Female avengers aren’t allowed to push so far. Punches are pulled because of a misguided sense that audiences will withdraw from a woman exhibiting the same traits celebrated in her male counterparts. This completely misses the point of these twisted scenes. The brutality of these moments belies just how disturbed these characters are, and offer them a chance at redemption.
