My very first relationship in high school was a toxic one; the kind that drains you mentally and physically. After I finally escaped the relationship, my ex-boyfriend’s former girlfriend reached out to me. From there, we formed an unexpected friendship. We not only bonded over our many similarities, but also the trauma we went through with our shared ex. Our relationship eventually turned romantic, but soon fell apart because, according to her, I was “acting like him.” That's when I realized I was caught in a cycle of abuse. I created “Strawberry” to examine the horrors of being trapped in such a cycle; how people who have been treated negatively may pick up that behavior without even being aware of it, just because it’s familiar to them. The horror genre allowed me to explore the paranoia and fear that comes with entering a new relationship after a toxic one through a more subjective lens.
