“Supine”
A French taxidermist, living in the remote countryside, meets an American hitchhiker and begins to question her life.
Inspired by the Brothers Grimm, I once embarked on creating a stop motion film featuring grotesque puppet creatures. I designed them and my friend built them. The project took a turn when I isolated myself in a dark room for animation, spending over 12 hours daily with these eerie figures, which surprisingly became my companions. I found myself talking to them, gradually treating them like people, which was comforting yet unsettling.
This experience gave birth to the idea of “Supine,” exploring how loneliness affects human-object interactions and inspired Sylvie’s character, a taxidermist in the French mountains. She finds solace in fixing roadkill, giving them a second life. This practice reflects “rogue taxidermy,” an ethically driven art popularized by women, mixing found animals with various materials.
“Supine” has a fairytale quality, evolving from dark puppets to a story about unconventional healing from loneliness, maintaining a Grimm-like ambiguity in its resolution.
