Textures questions the idealised conception of homecoming. In particular, the short interrogates the idea of home, a topic very close to the diaspora’s heart at the moment. The short aims to raise the following question, does a desired destination still matter to us when pre-established conditions are no longer met? Rather than an unequivocal celebration of black love and ‘meeting worlds’, I was more interested, through my characters, in ambiguity and uncertainty. Specifically in unresolved conflict which I see as a main drive for our biggest journeys in life. Particularly in art. The tension between parts. The consequences of difficult experiences are often interpreted as demons to combat, erase, rather than critical points of departure towards our greater journeys. They are what define us. Our distinctiveness. Our textures.
