The Motherhood Penalty
If passive aggressiveness were an Olympic conversation, the conversation between these two moms would win the gold medal. In this surrealist short super mom Anne Haste navigates her daily unpaid household labour with the help of her bestie -- "laundry monster Lisa" -- until an unwelcome surprise upends their conversation. The Motherhood Penalty is real. According to the World Economic Forum, it could take up to 131 years to close the gender gap in the global workforce. And adding "mother" to your resume is guaranteed to set you back even further. For every child a woman has, her income decreases by ~4% while men's incomes increase by ~6% according to Harvard economist and Nobel Prize winner Claudia Goldin. Furthermore, when they are working, mothers are perceived to be less committed to their jobs and less dependable (despite evidence to the contrary). Fathers on the other hand, are perceived to be more committed to their work than childless men and offered higher salaries. Motherhood isn't going anywhere and we need to challenge these patriarchal ideas. This film is just a tiny part of that conversation.
