When I met Byron Nicholai, I knew his story needed to be told. Byron shared with me that he’d produced an album in his Native language of Yup’ik in his bedroom during COVID, and it reached number two in the worldwide genre of Apple music. His next mission: Get back to his tiny home village of Toksook Bay (pop. 800) to play the album live for the people he grew up with. For a documentary filmmaker, these are the moments and that make your heartbeat surge. Soon we were flying to Toksook Bay. Although we come from different worlds, I saw in Byron a creative kinship. Here he was creating music in his bedroom each night, driven by a desire to put something magical into the world. There I was, editing video after my day job, working to make an impactful and inspiring film. Both of us driven by a guiding purpose. My storytelling philosophy is simple: Share new voices and create purpose-driven films that move audiences. “The Purpose of Song” is an independent film that does just that.
