I wrote THE REPEATER during the pandemic where I was lucky to pass time in a quiet mountainous village in northern Spain. I would run up the slopes, passing an old man who was walking up the same route. He’d try to chat to me, so I’d wave at him to pass. On the way down, he was still there. He was there every time I ran and it felt like a creepy infinity loop and the idea stuck. I started formulating the story, incorporating the feelings of isolation, surrealism, life's regret, and death as people I know passed away during this weird time that felt as if we were suspended from reality. The film is set in the same majestic mountains but I wanted to show them as a character as well, to portray the feeling that we are at the whim of nature. With a skeleton crew, we braved subzero temperatures to shoot this beautiful yet horrifying existential story. It is an ode to nature and a reminder to reach out to our loved ones.
