I know you all don't prioritize music videos, but I like to make mine like short films—it's like writing a film by starting with the score. You find the emotional arc of the track, and design the story to fit. In this case, The Sun Line is my own music—I wrote and performed the song, so I had the added benefit of knowing the piece inside and out from the very beginning. This is the story of a lonely man who is literally haunted by his own pain and sadness. In infiltrates every experience he has, especially his attempts at interacting with others, only dissipating when he decides to befriend it. Sad men (myself in included) tend to be absorbed in their pain, and I wanted to take this dynamic to surreal, comic lengths. The crux of the gag is a functioning beating heart. I wanted it to be practical, so we build a fully functional prop that uses 3D printed parts, servo motors, custom code, and a silicon carapace. We also created dummy versions that we could use for any stunts.
