Growing up in South Korea, no one ever cared to talk about what lies beyond the DMZ. North Korea only came up in the news when nuclear warfare or politics were involved. But what about the people? Although South and North Korea are no longer unified, we still share the same blood, family, and history. I often feel so close, yet so far to this estranged community I have an undeniable bond with. It’s time to shift the narrative surrounding North Korea to highlight the people. Although TO THE LIGHTS is a drama, there are moments of humor and levity that remind us that laughter and love is the best way to overcome adversity. I hope that this story can help amplify the voices of a community that have been overshadowed by media headlines for far too long. It’s important that North Koreans are not defined by tragedy, but by the light they offer amidst the darkness. Even in the world’s cruelest place, there is hope and humanity we can all learn to pass on.
