Filmmaker Statement

I am an Irish immigrant and was interested in portraying a story about dualism in identity, loss and addiction. Malcolm's story was a slow process of unfolding that led to an emotional truth that wasn't apparent at the start of the filmmaking. This created a tension in the story that helped portray his grief in a unique light. At first I was not going to include the story about Philip Seymour Hoffman but he was a part of Malcolm's past. In addition, it fit with the theme of grief and trying to push through it as opposed to moving on. The center of the story is Malcolm's relationship with his mother. The film culminates with a tragic awakening that Malcolm experiences when he loses his mother.
