Filmmaker Statement

This film was created during a rough patch in my life as I navigated graduating from my university's film program. My identity had been consumed by my academic career for nearly two decades, and with that coming to an end, I dreaded the idea of what was next to come. During my last semester at university, I was introduced to a pixel animation program. It caught my attention as a chance for me to grow my skills in a new creative outlet. I decided to create an original song and music video as a pixel-animated short to express all the inner turmoil I was facing. This film is an expression of confronting parts of yourself that scare you, the thoughts and emotions you try to repress. Vampire Boyfriend is about experiencing an unavoidable metamorphosis in life, which comes as an excruciatingly painful change even when faced head-on. I'm especially proud of this film as it was my first time using this medium, and for the fact that I was able to see this daunting project to completion.
