Robert Mentov is an independent filmmaker and cinematographer based in Toronto, Canada. He was born in Eastern Europe and immigrated to the West as a young child during the fall of the Soviet Union, leaving behind most of his family in the process. During his time in Canada, he sought refuge and acceptance amongst skateboarders, punks and artists, and learned the inner workings of the camera through documentation of the people around him. During 2019, he attended Terre Di Cinema, a lab in Catalina with a focus on 35mm analog film mediums. In 2022 he was accepted to an experimental film lab led by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. It took place over two weeks in the Peruvian jungle and Robert produced a film entitled “Los Misticos” as a result. This film was selected to participate in a group exhibition alongside Apichatpong at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. His sensibilities as a creative revolve around existential questions of home, identity and universal themes of what each of us require
