We’re Not Really Strangers is a narrative short film exploring a friendship many of us have experienced. We all have a friend we knew everything about, but now you’re… strangers. Everyone has unique experiences, but many of us have a close friend who is now an acquaintance. You see their life updates through carefully tailored social media posts rather than personal, visceral anecdotes. While many narratives latch onto romance, I believe that friendships hold just as much significance in the human condition––if not more. We’re Not Really Strangers captures the rise and fall of a friendship in five minutes. It attempts to encapsulate the nuance of a childhood best friend turned into… just a friend. Much like in real-life experiences, there is no major fight that triggers the spiral. Rather, it’s a realization of a difference in values, which is a devastation in its own right. It is a portrait and a drama, inspired by everyday life. I hope you see yourself in Mae’s story.
