Filmmaker Statement

Knowing that we were one year away from an endless list of responsibilities, we tried to make the most of our senior year of college. With no experience in filmmaking and only a passion for movies, we made this short film. The decision to make the movie in Russian was both a style choice and a practical one. We were inspired by Tarkovsky's Mirror and we also couldn't afford good actors. So we figured by having it in Russian, viewers would be too focused on reading the subtitles to notice the amateur acting skills. Thematically, What’s on your mind, Charlie? is about death in three forms. Death of self, death of a loved one, and death of college. Constantly thinking about the end allowed us to savor that final year with our friends. Thank you for watching.
