You Too is an anecdotal view of what happens when a forgotten population collides with a pop cultural event. Skid Row is an off-putting setting with unique characters, but their story deserves to be told - even if it resides in the shadows of famous rock band, U2, in their territory to film a legendary music video. Think Charles Bukowski providing commentary on an episode of Pop-Up Video. To honor this moment in music history, I wanted to make a film that felt like it was from a time capsule. We shot on S16mm to lend its grit to the film and bookended it with found footage. With Craig Stark & Keith Jefferson as our grifters, their natural rapport provided obscure levity while bouncing between the film’s thematic layers. Typically, I’d shy away from telling such a testosterone driven narrative but my appetite for off-beat humor and love for music history propelled me to take a chance. The result? A B-side story that shines a ridiculous light on the discarded tales of society.
