Since a young age, I’ve spent a lot of time on the volcanic Canary Islands, where part of my family lives. Returning often made me develop a deep connection to the landscapes and the culture. I felt especially drawn to the portrayal of young people on the islands — and to the protagonist’s conflict between leaving the island with his love or staying with his family to help maintain their vineyard. It’s a dilemma shared by many who grow up on islands or in places where nature constantly reminds you of life’s uncertainty. The power of young love is immense. It's a force that is unpredictable and hard to control. A volcanic village therefore seemed like the perfect arena to tell this personal story.
