During the summer of 2020, I found my mind churning after witnessing the tragedies of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and Elijah McClain. After months of intense reflection, I was driven to find a peaceful path forward by speaking up through art. I was compelled to step into the shoes of the strong Black mothers and fathers who gave speeches at rallies. I wondered, “what happens after the verdict is made?” “How do they move on from such a horrific tragedy?” Writing "A Cup of Tea" helped me to transform these immense questions about what it means to be a Black parent in America from an act of facing grief into forgiveness of others and oneself. With the support of many generous donors, we were able to commence principal photography on a beautiful day over Juneteenth weekend in 2023. We had a small crew made up of diverse talent, including multiple women of color. We humbly invite you to share "A Cup of Tea" in a safe space and to reflect on these tragedies while healing together.
