Filmmaker Statement

'A Fermenting Woman' will be my first project as a director, and as I step into the role of the creator, I think of the main character Marielle, an artist in the kitchen, whose urge to create is tied to her survival, forged through hard work, sacrifice and a burning desire to produce something meaningful (and a bit uncomfortable) to share with others. This is a film about the forces of creation. I’m interested in the links between a woman’s body and the creative process. The female body as a symbol for transformation and change. The story is an exploration of creation and a woman’s ability and choice to give life. I’m interested in the dual meanings conjured by period blood; which on one hand can symbolize fertility and life and on the other, can conjure disgust, shame, pain and unease associated with menstruating. A story about art, creation and fertility is indelibly the product of my own anxieties of motherhood- and being an artist. Through Marielle we explore a different kind
