Filmmaker Statement

I've created a short film about friendship and how we need one another to grow and break free from personal prisons and get through life's trials. The story and its main theme came to fruition in a roundabout way. Initially, I began by thinking about race and specifically my experience as a mixed-race person. I thought about how racism is a form of dehumanization and so I began to explore who defines what is human. I believe that God is the only one who can define humanity but what of our personal experience tells us this? To me it's a mystery that I may never understand, but for the sake of exploring these ideas on film, I wrote a narrative that leads the main character through stages of self-realization and ultimately a reckoning with mortality. Needless to say, this needs much more than a short film to explore. So I began focusing on the first act and attempted to create a mini-character arc based on the start of my protagonist's adventure. So, this is just the beginning...
