Filmmaker Statement

Baba is a film about what it mean to be visibly queer in a country that wants to keep you hidden. Libya has no rights to protect LGBTQ+ people. The stories of homosexual and gender queer acts leading to imprisonment, torture and brutal killings are terrifying. To be queer means to fear. But there is a burgeoning underground queer culture sprouting from the rubble of the civil war, and now is the time to fortify this rare stem of hope. We dream of young queer people across the world, huddling round a laptop, seeing our film and wondering for the first time whether they could love their country, their home.
