Filmmaker Statement

BRETT WAS A F*CK is a darkly comedic twist on a genre film that also hits on real issues. In our opinion, that's one of the best things about genre films -- that inside the entertaining, commercial candy shell is a rich chocolate center of thematic content. Also in our opinion, movies are M&Ms. In our case, BRETT uses the thriller/murder mystery format to investigate themes of privilege and power, and to draw attention to problematic gender, racial, and class dynamics. We look at the moral gray area of revenge – when, if ever, is it justified? Ultimately, the film calls into question the kinds of characters we tend to root for or villainize, and exposes the cavernous gap between who people say they are and who they reveal themselves to be.
