Throughout the pandemic, at least 17 restaurants and 139 stores in Manhattan Chinatown closed permanently. In addition, there was a 361% increase In anti-Asian hate crimes in New York City between 2020 to 2021. During this time, foot traffic in Chinatown was at an all-time low. As an Asian American artist living in New York City, I was compelled to convey the resiliency, strength, and spirits of Chinatown's multi-generational businesses and community members by amplifying their stories. A family store is not only a business, it represents a beacon of Chinese tradition and a way of life that if it were to shut down, a tradition dies. It is imperative to showcase the unique histories, traditions, and stories behind these stores and those who deeply care about them. It is also important to recognize the unity, strength, and dedication across generations in the Chinatown community to overcome difficulties and continue Chinese traditions in light of the current situations.
