With Dating Violet, I wanted to investigate how parental abuse that a child witnesses, affects that child’s relationships in the future. The film puts you in the shoes of Violet, lost in life and love, suffering growing up and broken relationships. I wanted to draw a strong parallel between the freedom of the outdoors, and the uncomfortable constriction of home, which is very true of teenagehood. It is inspired by the town in which I grew up, showcasing Australian coastal lifestyles and a unique perspective on surf culture. This film demonstrates the healing power of friendship and the surf as an escape for your mental health.
