When I watch modern action films, particularly with sword fights, they feel nothing more than a gimmick. The fight scenes seem like they were a check mark to be added to the film as a marketing ad. What I mean by this is most fight scenes I watch today lack a convincing story. Every good fight scene should tell a story about those characters and how they engage the world. What I wanted to do with Dauntless and the Demigod was make a film that hearkened back to the classic sword fighting films like The Princess Bride or The Mark of Zorro. A fight scene with longer takes, less cuts, and that tells a story within the larger narrative because that's what I feel is missing from cinema today.
