I wrote this film at a time when I was still in the early stages of understanding my queer identity. Labels felt too simple, too rigid, and two-dimensional. I knew that choosing some word to define myself would never be the full truth. The truth is, learning about ourselves isn’t something that begins and ends. I wanted to tell a story about two women, generations apart, who share this struggle of breaking away from the boxes in which we’re placed. Driving Louise is a coming-of-age story not limited by age or labels. It’s a journey of identity, but not about the destination. It’s about the multiplicity of love and our common thread — that we’re all just figuring it out.
