Ex Weeks Out is a somewhat—kinda, sorta—biographical narrative. I wrote it because there’s a community of bold, dedicated, badass women who compete in bodybuilding to feel strong, to prove to themselves they can, and to experience the glory of stepping on stage and saying, I did that. This film is for them. Sometimes heartbreak sparks the journey—but finishing it requires something else entirely. Something you didn’t even know you had in you. With a female director and Latinas fulfilling the roles of writer, lead, director of photography, first assistant director, and producer, I’m proud to say Ex Weeks Out is about empowerment both in front of and behind the camera. To all of us who have found ourselves under a barbell, staring into our own reflection thinking, there you are—this one is for you. Life will always throw curveballs, but with a little faith in yourself, and an epic training montage (or two… or three), we can do anything. Oh, and dogs—every good film needs a dog.
