Caught in a cycle of waiting for funding for my next feature I decided to throw caution to the wind and make a film with what I had around me. My daughter and my neighbor Foy's front yard with its fantasy crepe myrtle which is the oldest in North Carolina. Foy told me the story of how his son procured two young trees when he worked at the arboretum in college. One tree he gave to his dad and the other he took to his first home in Raleigh. The story kept rearing its head in my mind: two trees, living in two different cities, connected by genealogy, and both unique at one time in the past, real life--science even--becoming poetry. I decided to plant the story of these trees into a fictional story of two half sisters meeting for the first time. And, to echo the true story of the half sister trees I wanted them both to be connected but separate. I knew my daughter had climbed the tree and discovered a birds nest, so I wanted to find another little girl who had a real notable childhood
