Hangtime is a film about the commercial Black art world. Hangtime explores how traumatic aspects of Black history such as slavery and lynching are depicted, handled, and commodified in the name of art. As opposed to focusing exclusively on the perspective and responsibility of the Black artist, Hangtime brings the Black art worker, artist and collector into one frame, critically depicting a broader artistic ecosystem. Over the course of a single delivery and installation, Hangtime dares viewers to contend with the beautifully rich and complex range of conflicting and co-existing Black experiences and power dynamics.
