Filmmaker Statement

We love horror movies! Scary or funny? They are never dull. In all our films, our goal is to keep audiences guessing and take them on an emotional rollercoaster, and Hoax was no exception. Influenced strongly by indie pioneers David F Sandberg and Rob Savage, we aimed to make something with a small cast and crew that truly punched above its weight! At the same time, it was important to us to remain authentically Scottish, as we feel Scottish voices are underrepresented on screen. Hoax is the classic story of the boy who cried wolf, updated for the digital age. Our characters aren’t portrayed as greed-driven or attention-seeking extremes; they’re genuinely average, with good intentions, and frankly don’t deserve the relentless torment inflicted by the ruthless Margaret Mingle. This choice underscores a chilling reality: anyone could fall victim to such a fate. As Bryan Bertino’s The Strangers cruelly reminds us, sometimes the answer to “Why?” is simply: “Because you were home.”
