I've watched women close to me go through hell to achieve motherhood; endless, expensive rounds of IVF, hearts broken over failed adoptions. I’m so fascinated and utterly intrigued by the notion of a woman’s purpose; that, until recent decades, societies have told us that very purpose is ultimately, if not solely: motherhood. What does this mean for young women today? What can this inform us about our own mothers? And why and how is this urge so powerful to ultimately drive women to these greatest of lengths? With this film I wanted to challenge the idea of motherhood and the pressure on women to achieve it. For artistic emphasis, I’ve chosen to examine this phenomenon by adding a psychological thriller twist à la Black Swan or Rosemary’s Baby. In this story’s inception I imagined: what would be the ultimate length a woman could go to, would go to, in order to achieve the rank of motherhood? Kidnapping? Murder? Both? Here, is Identical.
