INFINITE MARGINS is a film about looking for things. It’s as much about my friend, Thomas Bird, looking through boxes of discarded books, finding something that makes him laugh or a signed first-edition for just £1, as it is about my own search for a subject. Thomas’s dedication to collecting seemingly worthless objects and his joy in each find fascinated me. I wanted to understand what compels him, indeed anyone, to pursue something, and resist that instinct to ask: Will he find what he’s looking for? Coming from a photography background, I’m interested in the idea of making a portrait in film and how little story is needed. Thomas has a robust sense of self, and he was surprised by the person I captured. Taking a DIY approach, I could get closer to Thomas’s compulsion to seek meaning and I recognised that desire in myself. In that sense, INFINITE MARGINS is also a film about friendship, being on this journey together without needing to know where it will lead or what we might find.
