Filmmaker Statement

INSIDE THE BOX is a very personal project, dedicated to two of my very best friends. They both have daughters named Alejandra and both of their husbands were political prisoners in Nicaragua, both of them being innocent, and both being known for opposing the Ortega government. This short film was produced and animated between Cuba, Nicaragua and Mexico, right after the prisoners were released by Ortega on Feb. 9th, 2023. They were expelled from their country and their nationality was taken away. This is one of the many recorded cases of human rights abuse by the Sandinista dictatorship. This is a homage to the more than 222 political prisoners that were released that day, all of whom had to endure almost two years of constant violation of their most basic human rights, with barely any communication with their families and physical torture.
