Filmmaker Statement

When I was awarded the grant through Visionary Justice StoryLab we were told we could make a film about anything that dealt with the theme "Resisting Narratives of Erasure". I looked at my past, in particular my growing up in a small, pretty conservative town in the South. I went to a predominantly white Christian school from Kindergarten-8th grade. For majority of my time at the school I was the Black student there. My formative years were surrounded by whiteness-- I learned to just let the micro aggressions wash over me. So, I decided to make a film about that experience. "INSPACE" roots from a comparison that I've made of being a lone Black person in white space to the idea of quite literally being alone in the vastness of outer space. Cold. Lonely. Suffocating. But, there has to be a way to overcome that. That's what "INSPACE" explores.
