Today, we’re celebrating Juneteenth—a day commemorating the emancipation of African-Americans in the U.S—specifically when freedom was proclaimed to enslaved people in Texas. It’s a day that means a lot of things for a lot of people. For many of us who are black/BIPOC—it’s a day of conflicted emotions. Of celebration but also sadness. Of hope but also trepidation. For many outside of our community, it’s an easy opportunity to take the observed day off, Monday, without really delving into and unpacking why we have it. That’s why noir, Wieden+Kennedy New York’s black affinity group, collaborated and created #JuneteenthThoughts—a film and social campaign that kicks off on social today with some posts and a film teaser. The film itself offers representation for the conversations we’ve been having in our circles—while inviting the broader community to have a seat at the table. After watching, please share your thoughts in the comments with #JuneteenthThoughts to keep the dialogue going. We appreciate your support and allyship.
