Filmmaker Statement

Kill The Video Star is based on the real-life stalker experiences of both it's star/composer acclaimed singer-songwriter MORLY and it's director/co-star Samuel. We both had insane experiences with obsessive stalkers and were struck by the unnerving, frightening and at times surreally beautiful communications they would send us. It became a creatively urgent need to get into the heads of these people and try and explore how these obsessions work. Weaved into this was a curiosity at the way female musicians experience power dynamics in the music industry. We were very inspired by Fiona Apple's 1997 MTV Awards speech (the 1997 setting is an homage to that), by Bjork's statements about how female creative control is routinely challenged, and how pressure to hyper-sexualise yourself as an artist is an evergreen cultural problem. The film is ultimately about the reclaiming of control, as Elsie Green goes from 'fuckable' to un-fuck-with-able.
