Filmmaker Statement

Six weeks, twenty-four-hour surveillance, manic confessionals and rigorous competition. That is the journey thirty women embark on, all to win the affection of one man, and if you are the lucky winner - his everlasting love. For those of you who do not already know, that is the general concept for the reality TV show The Bachelor. The mission is simple: happily ever after at whatever cost.  Twenty-seven seasons and counting, we are still watching a show that commodifies desirability, capitalizes on age-old gendered dynamics and exploits our fear of being alone. We cannot look away because it allows us to confront the possibility of doomed single-hood and unrequited love, with the possibility of finding “the one” dangling in front of us like a carrot. Despite its problematic messaging, I admit, I still tune in. I am always ready for the weekly ritual of The Bachelor with my girlfriends.
