Watermelons—universally beloved, indisputably delicious. Few could suspect something as innocuous as a summertime snack could stir up such controversy. However, if the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that people will get upset about literally anything. In the age of social media, our words have more power than ever. Perpetually-connected lifestyles have yielded a culture of opinion, where we all have a platform to shout our complaints. Fueled by rage and overpriced caffeine, we take to our keyboards and tweet our hearts out to scratch the itch of justice. We watch others scratch their own itches. Before you know it, everyone is scratching and things get weird. Yet, few are ever forced to reckon with the words they’re putting out into the world. This story is about standing up for yourself when the world is against you. It’s about how good intentions are meaningless when they fly in the face of truth. It’s about fruit, freedom, and fighting for what’s right.
