I’ve grown up all my life watching movies that celebrate and explore male sexuality, tell male stories, and have a predominantly male cast and crew. As a young woman myself, having mainly only seen women on screen portrayed through the male gaze as the love interest or eye candy to their male counterparts, I, just like Alanna, became very confused as a teenager about what the world expected me to be in order to be admired and loved. That feeling of always being looked at under a microscope, even when you’re alone, is a feeling I’m sure nearly every woman has experienced at one point or another. I’d like to think of “Naked” as a love letter to all the women out there who just can’t seem to win in a society that was built on their insecurities and lack of self love. I want this film to give clarity to some young, teenage girl out there, and let her know she isn’t alone. While becoming physically naked may be easy, becoming emotionally naked and vulnerable is what will set you free.
