Filmmaker Statement

After years of questions and research, my dear friend Sébastien Desrosiers found his father. This 72 year old Rwandan man was unaware he had a son until the day they met. 25 years after the genocide, Seb invited me along to Rwanda as he walked in the footsteps of his father in quest of answers, to meet his family who had survived and to connect with his ancestral land. By going to Rwanda last year to make a film about identity and family, but more so about the trickle down effects of mass violence against a group for the generations that follow, we found the most beautiful people and country. It was shot mostly on my Bolex 16mm and Brock Newman's glidecam. We velcro'd an iPhone to the back of the camera to us as a sort of viewfinder. The film was made with no money at all but our own and our desire to discover this country and Seb's story.
