Filmmaker Statement

This film explores the theme of racism and prejudice within hierarchical structures. It is a story of an everyday encounter between the working class and upper class, Native and Chinese-Indonesian people in Indonesia. When I was a kid , I lived in very racist Chinese-Indonesian environment. The racism thing happened because of the bad history between Native Indonesian and Chinese-Indonesian that occurs in May Riots 1998. Amid the violence, over 1,000 Chinese died and raped. Since then, the middle class and the wealthy Chinese-Indonesians living in the cities remain segregated. They live in different neighbourhoods and go to different schools from the so-called "Pribumis" or natives. They have limited interaction with people outside of their own ethnicity. The plot of the film is actually based on my own experience. I used to make race-related assumptions of taxi drivers and unconsciously be vigilant if they take unknown shortcuts, told me about their hardships of being a taxi driver
