Filmmaker Statement

Ode to Keeping a House Sweet pays tribute to the 1930s women-centric silent films. During the 30s, China was at the infant stage of modernization and urbanization. Tons of these films, such as The Goddess and New Women, appeared, exploring the systematic inequalities and discrimination against women and their predicament at the time. However, almost a century has passed, and these problems still linger. When writing Ode the Keeping a House Sweet, it was vital to recreate the the core of true women-centric films of that era. Within the film, three women represent three different images: a seeker of liberty, an embodiment of superstition, and a symbol of patriarchy. When creating the text slides, we wanted to push the boundaries of silent films while staying true to its roots, making these slides a character of their own.
