When I began writing this story with my friend, Brennan Bailey, its premise was vivid in my head. Two girls looking at dating app photos and interpreting them as a reflection of the user’s personality who sat on the other side of the virtual screen. This scene was rather a memory. A friend was visiting me for a month in a new city and, naturally, when she wanted to meet someone nice to go out with I helped her look. It was my first exposure to the online dating world. I remember reflecting back on our discussions and built-up convictions as we swiped right or left on potential candidates and thinking how funny and naively ridiculous our assumptions were. As our world becomes more and more distracted and shaped by filtered posts, we still somehow fail to separate reality from virtual perfection. I wanted to capture this in a comical romance. One that also reflected the innocence and excitement of wanting to find love, and the value of friendships throughout it all.
