The Narrator of Pietá is Julian, who tells the story of the loss of his best friend Jacob through a series of powerful and melancholic images. He didn’t see Jacob’s beautiful mother Rebecca again until years after his friend’s death, although his recollections of idyllic sunny afternoons in the garden with them show that she was always a replacement of his own mother whom he lost at a very young age.
Through contemplating the events, Julian learns that over time, one’s memory can become distorted and, as he goes back to the place where Jacob died, finds himself caught up in a cathartic experience with Rebecca.
