We’re living at a pivotal moment in history. Everyone knows this, but we’re already far off our self-imposed climate targets. There’s even a near 50% chance we’ll hit our 1.5 degrees threshold for before 2026. But because climate change seems like such a remote and intangible problem, many governments, companies, and individuals seem more concerned with appearing 'sustainable' to avoid criticism than actually changing their philosophy. We've seen the rise of greenwashing and 'carbon offsetting' where companies are carrying on business as usual without actually doing anything fundamental. In our society, it will be the richer governments, companies and individuals who have the greater means to greenwash and offset themselves away from responsibility. Recaptured is both an optimistic vision of what we are capable of, and a chilling warning of how that can be distorted by the inequality in our society already.
