Filmmaker Statement

RING BY SPRING is directly inspired by my time at a Southern Christian University. As I struggled with my sexuality, I watched friends go boy-crazy, get their hearts broken, and get engaged. I wouldn’t come out for a few years – because I, like our protagonist – was pushing that away in favor of what I “should” want. But it’s not just queer kids. Southern society at large, the church, and especially the culture of universities itself put harmful and undue pressure on young women to define themselves by their marital status before they can legally rent a car. It's my hope that this film will start conversations about this aspect of Southern culture and its effects.
