Filmmaker Statement

Safe/Sound really is the culmination of a decade-long attempt to not even master- but just merely to get a grip on my craft as a director. It's a film I was adamant on making in my hometown (and at my old high school), because that's where I fell in love with filmmaking; in one of only three New Zealand high schools that actually offered it as a subject. From the age of 13 I was putting together documentaries and short thrillers on the same streets I would later shoot Safe/Sound on. I remember being soaked in the coastal dreariness of my small town back then and dreaming about the day when I'd have the capability to accurately translate my mutant thoughts to screen. I guess now's that day?
