Salt Water Town explores the generational differences we are currently experiencing in the UK - socially and politically. A conflict prevalent in small towns where rural poverty is exacerbated by austerity driven politics. I couldn’t be further separated from my parents’ generation and I will delve into this niche relationship as I expose the characters’ contrasting world views. Glenn and Liam believe that culturally as ‘men’ they must single handedly control their futures. Expectations which when not met, create feelings of failure and loss of masculinity. Glenn’s stubbornness and his belief that things will return to a time of prosperity and social cohesion and Liam’s anger at being trapped by his economic status hinder their prospects for financial security - leading to conflict. Outdated beliefs from both characters breed aggressive patriarchal behaviour and the dangerous ramifications of these intense clashes of masculinity are illustrated in Liam's final act of violence.
