I have an ongoing film project I started in 2000, called RND#, which is preoccupied with tech and how it affects us. Soulmate is the 30th film (!) in the series and was written just before the pandemic (and well before ChatGPT blew up in society). I'm fascinated with what we will do if/when sentience arises in the machines we're designing. And how will we feel about it? This was the kernel of the idea for the short, but it is also the basis of a feature I have called Lifelike. Once Soulmate started to shape up to be about a relationship, I was keen to take the female perspective as I felt I could explore the emotional side of a relationship far more easily.
