Filmmaker Statement

Through the horror genre, SPELL ON YOU is a film about a child's rage erupting in the domestic space and the ambiguity she is confronted with, when trying to understand what family is. Inspired by my own childhood, the film describes how a little girl’s body - a wart - expresses a family’s disfunction. Something is looming. Unsaid. So, Salomé investigates. The atmosphere is that of a child’s nightmare. The wart that appears on Salomé’s nose acts as a revealer but also a symptom of a family secret. Salomé’s gaze is always alert, on guard. I wanted to film the adults from a child’s perspective, against their will, as Salomé spies on them (both curious and excited), attempting to dissect the strange world that surrounds her. With this film, I hope to defend another kind of fairytale, where young girls are dangerous and empowered witches.
