Filmmaker Statement

Our film is loosely based on a real childhood of experience producer / co-writer Reef Oldberg - who lived several years of his childhood in rural town in coastal Mexico. A whale beached and died at the local shore. The unfortunate animal became a gross nuisance for the whole town to deal with, and a weird, haunting act of nature for Reef to witness as a kid. That experience always stuck with Reef, and he hoped to use it in a film at some point. But depicting a dead whale in a live action film never seemed realistic. So, when Ben & Reef decided to make an animated film together - the whale premise ended up being perfect for that medium.
